OccuPride: 3 Years Before Stonewall

In 1966, three years before New York’s Stonewall riot, a San Francisco police officer walked into Compton’s Cafeteria responding to a call from the owner complaining of a rowdy customer. The officer roughly grabbed a trans woman, who’d had enough of police harassment and threw her coffee in his face. The customers rioted, pushing the police out into the street and smashing windows. They trashed a police car and set fire to a nearby newsstand. The police called for backup, but could not stop the movement that began that day. bayoccupride.com
