Erick Vidal Martinez is the second openly gay person to run for Congress in Honduras. What happened to the first? He was murdered. More than 70 LGBT activists have been murdered in targeted killings since the 2009 coup against democratically elected president Manual Zelaya. Erick is a human rights trainer who helped found the Diversity Movement in Resistance. He is running as a candidate with the LIBRE Party, an electoral party that has grown out of the resistance movement to that coup. Since the coup in 2009 Honduras has become the murder capital of the world. It is hard to overestimate the courage of those resisting the current government. U.S. money continues to flow to the Honduran police and military.
